Balaton – Plattensee
General: The biggest Central European lake. Very popular location for tourists and sailing.
It is known for the muddy water, but you can as well bathe in it. The northern shore is deeper than
the southern.
Where it is: The western Hungary, near the Austrian and Slovakian border.
Statistics: : Surface 592 km2, length 77 km, width 14 km, average depth 3,2 m, maximal depth
12 m, water temperature in August up to 26 °C.
Weather: Pannonian climate, constant winds.
Marines, yacht clubs: Marines and ports in most of bigger settlements around the lake.
Neusiedler See
General: : Natural park, beside the Balaton lake one of the rare steppe lakes in Europe,
very attractive for tourist and sailing. Driving with a motor boat is forbidden.
Where it is: : On Austrian-Hungarian border, 20 km from Vienna.
Statistics: Surface 157 km2, average depth 1 m, maximal depth 1,8 m, average water temperature
in August 25 °C.
Weather: Pannonian climate. The most common winds are northwest and south. The northwest is
stronger (4 to 7 Beauforts). On sultry summer days a storm can appear with dangerous wind of strength
10-12 Beauforts. All settlements near the lake have good information system with alarms when the
storm is nearing. The southern wind is ideal for sailing and it brings nice sunny weather.
