Neusiedler See
General: Natural park, beside the Balaton lake one of the rare steppe lakes in Europe,
very attractive for tourist and sailing. Driving with a motor boat is forbidden.
Where it is: On Austrian-Hungarian border, 20 km from Vienna.
Statistics: Surface 157 km2, average depth 1 m, maximal depth 1,8 m, average water
temperature in August 25 °C.
Weather: Pannonian climate. The most common winds are northwest and south. The northwest is
stronger (4 to 7 Beauforts). On sultry summer days a storm can appear with dangerous wind of
strength 10-12 Beauforts. All settlements near the lake have good information system with alarms
when the storm is nearing. The southern wind is ideal for sailing and it brings nice sunny weather.

Woerther See
General: : The biggest Austrian Carinthian lake, of glacier origin. Very popular location,
it is hard to find a piece of a shore that is not a private property. Woerther See is the most
interesting for sailing among the Austrian Carinthian lakes. In Carinthia in Austria, there is a
general interdiction to use motor boats on the lakes, except with a licence; the same they have a
general interdiction to drive on lakes at night.
Where it is: Southern Austria, Carinthia, 2 km west from Klagenfurt.
Statistics: Surface 19,4 km2, length 19,5 km, width 1 km, maximal depth 85 m, water
temperature in August 25 °C.

6 Beauforts, in spring or in autumn it can last few days. The east wind brings nice weather.

Faaker See
General: It is known for the clean, turquoise colour. In Carinthia in Austria, there is a

General: The second largest lake in Carinthia in Austria. The northern shore is more or less

Attersee
General: : Modest on the first sight, however it is the biggest lake in the Salzburg area.
Sailing is well developed.
Where it is: : Upper Austria, near Linz.
Statistics: Surface 46,7 km2, maximal depth 169 m, water temperature in August 22 oC.
Weather: : In normal weather conditions a jerky western wind blows. The best winds for
sailing are in sunny weather, when southern wind blows in the mornings and in the afternoons. At
the noon northeast wind blows, also ideal for sailing, but usually it does not blow over the whole
lake, but only up to Schwendereck. In the southern part of the lake thunderstorms are possible.

Traunsee
General: They claim it being a sailing paradise - the sailing is well developed,
there are regattas through the whole year. Eastern and southern part of the shore are relatively
steep and inaccessible.
Where it is: Upper Austia, close to Salzburg.
Statistics: Surface 24,5 km2, length 12 km, width 3 km, maximal depth 191 m, water
temperature in August 20 oC.
Weather: Despite well developed sailing conditions the winds are not always the best for
sailing. In normal weather conditions irregular and jerky western wind blows. When the weather is
nice southern wind blows in the night, in the morning there are few hours of calm and then northeast
wind blows through the day. From the west a dangerous stormy wind can come, with strength up to 8
Beauforts. It brings clouds, but usually stops in half an hour.

Mondsee
General:
Where it is: Upper Austria, between Salzburg and Linz.
Statistics: Surface 14,2 km2, maximal depth 68 m, water temperature in August 24 oC.
Weather: The winds are often whirling and jerky, also (or especially) when the weather
is nice. The best sailing conditions are at weak weather front when it blows from the west.
When the weather is nice a convenient eastern wind with strength from 3 to 4 Beauforts can blow in
the eastern part of the lake.

Trumer Seeland
General: Mattsee, Obertrumersee, Grabensee – three nearby located lakes in upper Austria,
very popular summer resort. Sailing is possible on the lakes Mattsee and Obertrumersee.
It is forbidden to use motor boats. Sailing conditions in summer are good.
Where it is: 15 km from Salzburg.
Statistics: Mattsee: surface 3,6 km2, maximal depth 40 m, water temperature in August 24 oC;
Obertrumersee: surface 4,9 km2.
Weather: Alpine climate. The best for sailing is thermic eastern wind that blows in nice
weather and achieves the strength up to 5 or 7 Beauforts. Western wind usually brings a front and
bad weather, its strength is usually around 3 Beauforts.

Zeller See
General: The centre of sailing activities is on the northern shore. Good sailing conditions.
Where it is: Salzburg region.
Statistics: Surface 4,7 km2, maximal depth 68 m, water temperature in August 23 °C.
Weather: Smaller thermic winds – southern till 10 AM and northern since 1 PM. The best
sailing conditions are in spring and in autumn, when the south wind from the Alps blows – so called
fen. The western weather is predominating, bringing western wind, convenient for sailing.

Achensee
General: A known sailing centre.
Where it is: Tyrol, Austria.
Statistics: Surface 7,3 km2, maximal depth 133 m, water temperature in August 19 °C.
Weather: Good sailing conditions. In nice weather southern thermic wind blows in the morning
and northern thermic wind in the afternoon, with strength 3 to 5 Beauforts. In bad weather
northern wind blows with strength 3 to 5 Beauforts. It is rarely windless, usually when weather
changes.

Bodensee
General: After the Balaton lake and and Genfer See the third biggest Central European lake.
Where it is: : At the border between Austria, Gremany and Switzerland.
Statistics: Surface 536 km2, length 63 km, width 14 km, maximal depth 254 m, average depth
90 m, water temperature in August 20 °C.
Weather: In nice weather constant, but weak thermic wind blows, in the morning from the land
to the lake and in the afternoon from the lake to the land. Otherwise western winds are
dominating, in spring and in autumn especially they can bring thunderstorms.

The Old Danube/Alte Donau
General: : Regulating the river Danube enabled sailing activities in Vienna and its
surroundings. On the old Danube the sailing is active on the area between the bridge of emperor
Ferdinand and the dam Damm der Kagraner Reichsstrasse (or Wagramer Strasse).
